Koala Tid Bits

Koalas are marsupials native to Australia, known for their fluffy gray fur, large round ears, and spoon-shaped noses. They live mainly in eucalyptus forests, spending most of their time in trees. Koalas feed almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves, which are low in nutrients and require a slow metabolism to digest. Because of this, koalas sleep up to 18–20 hours a day to conserve energy. Female koalas carry their young, called joeys, in a pouch for about six months before the joey rides on its mother’s back. Though often called “koala bears,” they are not bears but marsupials. Koalas face major threats from habitat loss, disease, and climate change, which reduce eucalyptus forests and food availability. Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection and breeding programs. Despite their sleepy appearance, koalas are strong climbers and play an important role in maintaining the health of Australia’s forest ecosystems. --AI
